Jean Roelke has a B.A. in visual art from Austin College, and a PhD. in creative writing from the University of North Texas. She taught writing at UNT for twenty years, where she served as faculty advisor for the student literary journal, and assistant director of College Writing. Jean has shown her artwork locally, regionally, and internationally. Her book of poetry, "The Shape of Breathing," was published by Red Mare Press.
I have been trained in drawing, design, painting, sculpture, poetry, bookmaking, and literature. My work tends to cross traditional artistic boundaries, and often includes mixed media collage. I have also worked with photography, video, installations, and performances. I am inspired by experimentation, and like to see where my materials will lead me. Artistic exploration has been a way for me to try to understand the world and our place in it.
