Barb has been an artist all her life and grew up in the Western Suburbs of Chicago. She holds an AA degree and Digital Prepress Production Certificate. Her BFA degree is from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she majored in Ceramics and Textile Design.
Barb has been working as a self-employed artist and art related volunteer since relocating to Denison, Texas in 2015.
Two dimensional found object assemblages, paintings and sculptures have been shown in many group and solo shows. She particularly enjoys combining her work with her love of music and Urban Photography.
Her process as a visual artist is to combine different techniques to create work that feels challenging, yet comfortable. Ninety-five percent of the work is unplanned with a detachment from any type of deliberate outcome.
Involvement in Gourd Art started in 2017 after joining the Dallas Gourd Patch. She enjoys sharing about this early art form at Makers Markets and festivals. Other venues include The Dallas Arboretum and Texas State Fair.
Barb has taught several Gourd Art classes through local art organizations. In 2024 she taught at the North Texas Gourd Festival in Granbury, TX.
My overall vision is to continue to keep learning and keep my work as spontaneous and experimental as possible, even when a show or exhibition is theme based. In creating, I try to detach myself from any type of planned outcome. A theme, title, or song always associates itself to the work at some point. I play with balance, structure and the “fit” of the colors or objects within the way they show themselves. I manipulate the work to the point where the spontaneity feels “whole”.
My process as a visual artist is to combine different techniques to create work that feels challenging, yet comfortable. Ninety-five percent of my work is unplanned until I start creating.
Art media may include various inks, markers, acrylics, watercolors, paper, fabric and Powertex products.
In this series I have used alcohol ink, acrylic paint, and charcoal, and permanent marker on gesso panels.
